A Historic Visit After Fifteen Years
Sources from the Spanish Episcopal Conference indicate that Pope Pius XIV is actively considering an official visit to Spain in June 2026. If the trip materializes, it will mark the first papal visit to Spain in fifteen years, following Pope Benedict XVI’s visit in August 2011 to close World Youth Day in Madrid.
The news was first revealed by the president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, Luis Argüello, after a meeting with the Pope on November 17, 2025. At the time, he expressed his hope that the Pope would visit Spain “in the near future.” Subsequently, the Pope himself confirmed the “possibility” of the visit to Spanish journalists.
High-Level Meeting to Finalize Visit Details

To move the plan forward, the presidency of the Spanish Episcopal Conference and the Vatican’s Secretariat of State have scheduled a meeting in Rome for January 9, 2026. The core agenda of this meeting is the preliminary preparation and coordination for this potential papal visit, including discussions on the specific itinerary and program.
Potential Destinations and Their Symbolic Significance
The Spanish side has proposed several potential destinations to the Vatican, each with special significance. These include:
- The Canary Islands: As a frontline of Europe’s migration crisis, a visit here would focus on the issues of migration and human trafficking, continuing the concern for this issue highlighted by the late Pope Francis.
- Barcelona: 2026 is the year the Sagrada Família is expected to be completed. Additionally, its architect, Antoni Gaudí, may be beatified around the same time, making a visit here highly significant both culturally and religiously.
- Valladolid: To commemorate the centenary of the canonization of Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo, who once served as the Archbishop of Lima.
Aligning with Major Religious Events in Spain in 2026
Choosing 2026 for the visit also aligns with several important religious commemorations in Spain that year. In addition to the events mentioned above, 2026 also marks the centenary of the canonization of Saint John of the Cross. Furthermore, Spain will jointly celebrate a Jubilee Year with the Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru. Since Pius XIV served as the bishop of this diocese before becoming Pope, this adds a personal dimension to the visit. Before his episcopal ordination, Pius XIV had also visited several Spanish cities on official business, including Ávila, Málaga, and Bilbao, so he is no stranger to the country.
