Common vs. Rare: The Stark Contrast in Spanish Surnames
According to official research by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estadística, INE), the most common surname in Spain is ‘García’, borne by as many as 1,462,923 people, followed by ‘Rodríguez’ and ‘González’. However, at the other end of the spectrum, the INE’s interactive data tool also documents a set of extremely rare surnames made up of just two letters, providing a unique glimpse into Spain’s demographic composition.
The Demographic Map of Two-Letter Surnames
The Spanish naming system traditionally includes both a paternal surname (first surname) and a maternal surname (second surname). The INE’s data provides a detailed breakdown of how many people carry these two-letter last names as their first or second surname and where they are located.
- Pi: This is the most populous of these short surnames, with 2,170 people having it as their first surname and 2,014 as their second. The surname is primarily concentrated in the Catalonia region, especially in the province of Girona.
- No: Relatively more common, 179 people carry it as a first surname and 143 as a second. It has a wider distribution, found in provinces such as A Coruña, Madrid, and Barcelona.
- Sa: Statistics show a total of 326 cases, but the raw data does not differentiate its use as a first or second surname as it does for others.
- Va: There are 94 people with ‘Va’ as their first surname and 99 as their second, mainly found in Huesca, Zaragoza, and Barcelona.
Micro-Surnames on the Brink of Extinction
Some two-letter surnames, due to their extremely small number of bearers (fewer than 20 people), are on the verge of disappearing, with their presence almost exclusively confined to specific cities.
- Sé: Extremely rare, only 12 people in the entire country have this as a first surname and 15 as a second. All of them are registered in Barcelona.
- Oz: Only 17 people carry this as their first surname, appearing mainly in Barcelona and Madrid.
- Ca: There are 61 bearers as a first surname and 20 as a second, distributed across Lleida, Barcelona, Madrid, and Almería.
- Si: 43 people have it as a first surname and 14 as a second, found in Madrid, Barcelona, and Granada.
