Spain’s Ministry of Defence Orders 100 Airbus Helicopters, Set to Create Over 300 Jobs
The Spanish Ministry of Defence recently formalized several contracts with Airbus, ordering a total of 100 helicopters. As a core part of the National Helicopter Plan, this move will significantly enhance the transport, training, and operational capabilities of the Spanish Armed Forces. The project is expected to create over 300 high-skilled direct jobs within the next three years and will further solidify Spain’s position in the European aerospace industry.
Key Contract Details
According to the contracts, the helicopters procured by the Spanish Ministry of Defence through the Directorate General for Armament and Material (DGAM) include several models:
13 H135 light helicopters, primarily for observation and pilot training missions for the Air and Space Force, as well as support missions for the Navy;
50 H145M multi-role helicopters, allocated to the Army Airmobile Force (FAMET) for disaster relief, training, and light attack missions;
6 H175M helicopters, designated for providing government and VIP transport services for the Air and Space Force, replacing older models;
Additionally, there are 31 NH90 tactical transport helicopters, distributed among the Army, Air Force, and Navy for tactical transport, special operations, and amphibious warfare support.
Employment and Industrial Benefits
The project will create over 300 high-skilled direct jobs in the Albacete region of Spain. Airbus will establish a new military helicopter customization center and develop an international training hub for H145M pilots and technicians in the area. These initiatives will not only ensure job sustainability but also prevent skills shortages. At the same time, the Albacete site will expand its digital and network capabilities, collaborating with local universities and technology parks to create a ‘Digital Campus’ focused on the development of digital tools and cybersecurity for all Airbus helicopters.
Supporting Training System Development
The contract also includes a new Integrated Training System (ITS-C), aimed at elevating the overall training standards of the Armed Forces. Furthermore, the Spanish Ministry of Defence has separately procured 18 C295 transport aircraft, specifically for advanced training of pilots and paratroopers. These transport aircraft will further optimize the logistics and operational efficiency of the Armed Forces.
Official Statements
The Spanish Secretary of State for Defence, María Amparo Valcarce García, stated that this contract fulfills the Ministry’s commitment to provide the Armed Forces with the latest generation of helicopters. This strategic investment will significantly enhance national security and defense capabilities, ensuring strategic autonomy in key areas of European defense. Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, emphasized that this order strengthens the company’s industrial presence in Spain and positions the country as a benchmark hub for the European aerospace industry.
