Barça’s 15-Year-Old Star Ebrima Tunkara Renews Contract, Foiling Real Madrid’s Plans
Just a few days ago, FC Barcelona reached an agreement in principle to renew the contract of its 15-year-old academy talent, Ebrima Tunkara. The rising star, dubbed the “new Lamine Yamal” by Spanish media, has chosen to commit his future to La Masia.
From Gambia to La Masia
Tunkara’s football journey began in Gambia. In 2017, at the age of 7, he moved with his father to Cerdanyola, Spain. After joining the local team, Cerdanyola FC, his talent was quickly discovered. In 2018, Barça youth coach Albert Puig Alcaide scouted him for just ten minutes in a match before recognizing his extraordinary potential. He immediately recommended Tunkara to the club’s hierarchy, Marc Serra and Aureli Altimira, urging them to sign the young player.
The Rise of a “Team-Oriented” Talent
As a left-footed player, Tunkara is known for his excellent dribbling, ability to shield the ball, and quick turns, along with a powerful shot. In the 2019-2020 season, at just 10 years old, he scored an astonishing 52 goals in the youth league. Coach Puig, who discovered him, points out that unlike Lamine Yamal’s more individualistic style, Tunkara is “a player who elevates the whole team.” His presence makes his teammates play better.
Facing Temptation from Top Clubs, His Heart Belongs to the Blaugrana
As Tunkara’s reputation grew, top European clubs began to take notice. According to media reports, Real Madrid had planned to take advantage of his contract expiring in 2026 to sign him. However, Tunkara and his family have a deep affection for Barcelona and have remained level-headed. His father has always taught him to stay humble and decided not to sign with an agent until he turns 16. Tunkara himself stated in 2022 that living alongside first-team players at La Masia was an “unbelievable” experience, showing his strong sense of belonging.
Renewal and Future Prospects
Currently, the 15-year-old Tunkara plays as a right winger for Barça’s Juvenil A (U19) team, contributing 4 goals in 10 league matches this season. He has already been promoted to the Spain U17 national team, where he serves as captain, demonstrating the high regard the Spanish Football Federation has for him. This contract renewal is not only a recognition of his talent but also signifies that Barcelona has secured a key player for the future. It is widely expected that Tunkara will get his first-team opportunity within the next 2 to 3 years and become a crucial force for the Spanish national team at the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted on home soil.
