On January 12, 2026, Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility launched the pre-sale of the unified national transport pass (Abono Único), which officially became effective on January 19. This new policy, introduced amidst high inflation, aims to ease the financial burden of travel for residents by subsidizing public transport, making it more convenient for commuting, studying, and intercity travel.
Pricing and Eligibility
The standard price for the monthly pass is €60. To encourage young people to use public transport, the government offers a half-price discount for a specific age group: users born on or after January 1, 2000, can purchase the pass for just €30. The pass is valid for 30 days, starting from the first use. To get the youth discount, users must complete a one-time, free registration on the Ministry of Transport’s official website to verify their age eligibility.
Network Coverage
The “Abono Único” pass offers extensive coverage, integrating Spain’s main national public transport systems. Within its validity period, pass holders can take unlimited trips on:
- National long-distance bus routes.
- The Cercanías commuter train network operated by Renfe (Spanish National Railways).
- The Rodalies commuter rail system in the Catalonia region.
- Renfe’s Media Distancia (medium-distance) trains.
- Certain AVANT high-speed train routes, including Madrid-Salamanca, Alicante-Murcia, Ourense-A Coruña, and Barcelona-Tortosa (excluding the section between Barcelona and Tarragona).
How to Buy and Use
Passengers can purchase the pass through various channels, including Renfe’s official website and mobile app, the online platforms of major bus companies, and at ticket offices and vending machines in train stations. The pass is personalized and non-transferable, meaning it can only be used by the registered holder. When traveling, passengers must carry a valid ID (such as a DNI or NIE) for inspection.
Although the pass allows for unlimited travel, most medium and long-distance services are not “hop-on, hop-off.” Passengers still need to reserve a seat in advance before boarding long-distance buses and Media Distancia trains. According to the rules, a maximum of four one-way journeys can be booked on Renfe’s Media Distancia trains per day, with a minimum time interval required between trips. Bus reservations are typically limited to one trip per direction, per day.
Misuse and Penalties
The Spanish Ministry of Transport has established strict penalties for improper use of the pass. Actions considered a violation include booking a seat but not traveling (a no-show without timely cancellation) or lending the pass to another person. Penalties may include, but are not limited to, a temporary account suspension, a ban on purchasing a new pass for up to 60 days, and potentially the permanent revocation of eligibility for the youth discount. No refunds will be issued for fees paid in cases of misuse.
