Recently, ‘Ostras Pedrín,’ a well-known restaurant chain in the Spanish capital of Madrid, has become a focus of public health concern. The chain’s branch in the Chamberí district is at the center of a suspected food poisoning incident linked to raw oysters, which has so far affected 10 people.
Incident Overview and Patient Symptoms
According to information released by Madrid’s Public Health Department, the cases occurred within a concentrated four-day period. The 10 affected diners all experienced varying degrees of discomfort after consuming raw oysters at the restaurant. Four of them received professional medical treatment due to more pronounced symptoms.
The main clinical symptoms reported were vomiting, non-inflammatory diarrhea, and abdominal pain, with no cases of fever. Most individuals found their symptoms resolved on their own within 24 to 36 hours. Preliminary evidence suggests this may be a typical gastroenteritis event caused by a foodborne pathogen such as norovirus.
Health Department’s Investigation
Upon receiving the reports, Madrid’s Public Health Department responded swiftly. An inspection team conducted an on-site examination and collected samples from the restaurant in question on January 9, 2026. According to the initial inspection, no obvious hygiene violations were observed. Currently, the samples are undergoing laboratory testing to determine the specific cause of the poisoning, with final results still pending.
Notably, ‘Ostras Pedrín’ is a restaurant chain with branches in other locations, including Valencia. Therefore, the Madrid health authorities are in close communication with their counterparts in Valencia to check for any cross-regional impact and to coordinate a thorough investigation.
The Restaurant’s Response

In response to the crisis, the management of ‘Ostras Pedrín’ stated that they have proactively contacted all known affected customers to express their concern. The restaurant has pledged full cooperation with the health department’s investigation and has already issued full refunds to the directly impacted diners through electronic payment channels.
The restaurant also emphasized that the number of affected customers represents a very small fraction of their substantial monthly sales volume. As of now, although the investigation is ongoing, the restaurant remains open for business. This incident serves as another reminder for consumers to be aware of the potential food safety risks when enjoying raw seafood.
