New to Spain? Let’s Talk About the Real Level of Women’s Basketball Here
Lately, I’ve seen quite a few women playing basketball in the parks on weekends, and they’re pretty serious about it. It got me curious: what’s the overall level of women’s basketball in Spain? It feels like when people talk about basketball, it’s always about the NBA or men’s teams, and the women’s side doesn’t get as much attention.
National Team Level: A European Powerhouse
I did a little research and was genuinely shocked. The Spanish women’s national team is consistently ranked in the world’s top five and is an absolute European powerhouse! They’ve won silver and bronze at the World Championships and an Olympic silver medal. Their record in the EuroBasket is even more glorious, with numerous titles. So, when it comes to the Spanish basketball level, if someone tells you the Spanish women’s team is good, that’s no mere compliment—they are truly, incredibly skilled. Their status is almost comparable to the men’s national football team in the world of soccer.

Professional League: Liga Femenina Endesa
Spain’s domestic women’s basketball league, the Liga Femenina Endesa, is also one of the top-tier leagues in Europe. Many WNBA players come here to play during their offseason, which gives you an idea of the league’s intensity and quality. Teams like Valencia Basket and Perfumerías Avenida are regulars in European competitions. If you want to watch high-level basketball but can’t get tickets for the Real Madrid or Barça men’s games, watching a women’s game is a fantastic and affordable option!
Amateur and Youth Basketball
When the professional level is high, the grassroots foundation is usually strong too. Spain has a rich basketball culture, with many schools and communities having their own teams, and female participation is very high. From young children to adults, there are leagues at various levels to join.
| Level | How to Participate | Popularity |
| Youth | Schools, club academies | Very High |
| University League | University teams | High |
| Amateur Adult | Community, city leagues | Widespread |
Women’s basketball in Spain is structured like a pyramid. At the top are the world-class national team and professional league, supported by a broad and solid grassroots foundation. It’s not like in some countries where maybe only the national team is strong but there’s little grassroots participation in Spanish sports. Here, the strength runs from top to bottom. Even though I’m a terrible player myself, it’s a real thrill to watch.
