Hey everyone on the Spain forums! I was recently looking into the presence of Chinese universities in Spain and stumbled upon something quite interesting that I had to share, especially for alumni of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC)!
I always assumed that only language-focused institutions would establish partnerships in Spain. So, I was surprised to find that the renowned UESTC also has a ‘foothold’ here. But its location is quite unexpected—not in Madrid or Barcelona, but on the stunningly beautiful Canary Islands!
Specifically, UESTC has partnered with Spain’s University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) to co-establish a Confucius Institute, officially named the ‘Confucius Institute at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.’ Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a full-fledged research campus. Its primary functions are the familiar ones: teaching the Chinese language, administering HSK tests, and organizing Chinese cultural events. Still, for a top-tier science and engineering university to establish such a cultural hub abroad, especially in a prime tourist destination like Spain, is quite an achievement.

Partnership at a Glance
I’ve put together a simple table to make things clear:
| Partner Institution | Location | Main Collaboration Focus |
| University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) | Chengdu, China | Chinese Partner University |
| University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) | Gran Canaria, Spain | Spanish Partner University |
| Confucius Institute at ULPGC | Gran Canaria, Spain | Chinese language teaching, cultural exchange, Sino-Spanish collaboration projects |
While it’s not a full campus where you can directly enroll in a Master’s or PhD program, this Confucius Institute greatly facilitates academic exchange between the two universities. It’s an interesting development for anyone following the story of a potential UESTC in Spain. I’ve heard their partnership also extends to fields like ocean science and information technology, so the future looks promising! Is anyone here living on the Canary Islands who has visited this Confucius Institute? Or are there any UESTC alumni with more inside info about studying in Spain as a UESTC alum? Feel free to leave a comment and discuss below! Maybe on your next vacation to the Canary Islands, you can pay a visit to your ‘alma mater’ too
