Location and Overview

The Geoda de Pulpí is located in the municipality of Pulpí, in the southern Spanish province of Almería, approximately 120 kilometers from the city of Murcia. It is one of the largest accessible geodes discovered worldwide, with an interior chamber measuring about 8 meters long and 2 meters high. Situated 45 meters underground, visitors must descend 164 steps to reach this subterranean marvel.
Crystal Characteristics and Preservation
The geode’s interior is lined with translucent crystals, primarily composed of selenite. These enormous crystals, some reaching nearly 2 meters in length, create the illusion of being inside a world of ice. However, these seemingly hard crystals are extremely fragile, with a Mohs hardness only slightly greater than a human fingernail. To protect this precious geological heritage, visitors are strictly forbidden from touching the crystals and may only observe them from a designated area at the entrance of the chamber.
Tour Process and Restrictions
The entire guided tour lasts approximately 120 minutes. For safety and conservation reasons, there is a strict age limit: children under 8 are not permitted. During the tour, visitors do not fully enter the geode. Instead, they are guided to the opening and can lean in to view the spectacular interior. This policy is designed to minimize human impact on the fragile crystal environment.
