A friend recently asked me about studying in Spain and specifically mentioned the University of Alcalá. Since I’ve done a bit of research on it, I thought I’d organize my notes and share them. Hope this helps anyone who’s interested!
University of Alcalá: More Than Just History
When you think of the University of Alcalá, the first word that comes to mind is ‘ancient.’ Founded in 1499, it’s one of the oldest universities in the world, and its entire campus and historic city center are designated as a World Heritage Site. Walking around campus feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages. Of course, its biggest claim to fame is the great writer Miguel de Cervantes; University of Alcalá was his alma mater. Each year, the ‘Cervantes Prize,’ the highest honor in the Spanish-speaking world, is awarded here. This rich cultural atmosphere is something truly special and not found at every university.

Top Programs and Academic Standing
Naturally, the humanities are the University of Alcalá’s greatest strength, particularly in Hispanic studies and literature, where it’s a leading institution in Spain. If you’re planning to study Spanish or a related field, this is definitely the right choice. Additionally, its programs in Pharmacy, Law, Medicine, and Telecommunications Engineering are also highly regarded. While its overall ranking might not be as high as Complutense University of Madrid or the University of Barcelona, its excellence in specific fields is undeniable.
Campus Life and Cost
The university is located in Alcalá de Henares, a classic university town—it’s quiet, safe, and has a relaxed pace of life. Compared to the hustle, bustle, and high prices of downtown Madrid, the cost of living is significantly lower here. It’s only about a half-hour train ride to Madrid’s city center, making transportation very convenient. So, you can enjoy a peaceful study environment and still easily head into Madrid to explore on the weekends—it’s the best of both worlds!
For prospective applicants, it’s crucial to have all your documents in order. While requirements may vary slightly by program, here are the general materials you’ll need:
| Document Type | Description |
| Academic Credentials | High school diploma/university degree, must be notarized and apostilled/legalized |
| Transcripts | Complete university transcripts, also require notarization and apostille/legalization |
| Language Proficiency | DELE B2 or SIELE certificate is the basic requirement. |
| Resume/CV | Curriculum Vitae (CV), in Spanish. |
| Statement of Purpose | Carta de Motivación (Statement of Purpose), very important! |
Ultimately, choosing a university is about choosing a lifestyle. The University of Alcalá offers an immersive learning experience steeped in history and culture. Are there any current students or anyone who has visited Alcalá here? Feel free to add your own experiences or ask questions in the comments
