Every March, Las Fallas in Valencia captivates the world with its spectacular scale, but the festivities truly begin long before. Even before ‘La Crida’ (the official opening call) in February, two pivotal coronation ceremonies set a dignified tone for the entire celebration. These events, honoring the Fallera Mayor and Fallera Mayor Infantil, are central to the festival’s tradition and the passing of its legacy.
January 30: The Coronation Night of the Fallera Mayor
On the evening of January 30, the coronation ceremony for the Fallera Mayor took place at the Palau de la Música. The chosen Fallera Mayor for the year, Carmen Prades Gil, and her 12-member Court of Honor, resplendent in traditional attire, rode in vintage cars from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to the venue. The formal proceedings included the bestowing of the sash and diadem symbolizing her title, followed by official speeches. The evening concluded with a small fireworks display.
January 31: The Coronation Ceremony of the Fallera Mayor Infantil
The following day, January 31, the coronation ceremony for the Fallera Mayor Infantil was held at the same venue. The young representative for the year was Marta Mercader Roig. In contrast to the previous evening, this ceremony had a more relaxed and lighthearted atmosphere, filled with family warmth and well wishes for the younger generation. The Fallera Mayor Infantil and her Court of Honor also arrived in vintage cars, receiving their titles before family, friends, and the public, officially undertaking their role as the young ambassadors of Valencia’s Fallas heritage.
A Symbol of Responsibility and Heritage
These two coronations are more than just the bestowing of a personal honor; they represent a symbolic transfer of cultural responsibility. As the highest ambassador of the festival, the Fallera Mayor assumes a significant public role throughout the Las Fallas season.
