Madrid-Barcelona High-Speed Line Extends Travel Times to Ensure Safety
Spain’s railway infrastructure manager (Adif) has announced a new operational plan for the high-speed corridor connecting the capital, Madrid, and Barcelona, from February to December 2026. All train journey times will be extended by approximately 25 minutes, and some late-night services will be canceled. This adjustment is the result of joint discussions between Adif and the three rail operators: Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo.

Why the Timetable Adjustment?
The primary goal of this large-scale adjustment is to secure a sufficient nighttime window for track maintenance work. For a long time, train drivers have repeatedly reported safety concerns on this line, with complaints increasing significantly, especially after the Adamuz incident.
Adif explained that multiple ‘Temporary Speed Restrictions’ (LTVs) put in place to address line issues have often delayed the arrival of night trains to their final destinations until the early morning hours, severely squeezing the scheduled maintenance window from 0:00 to 6:00 daily. If maintenance crews cannot complete the inspection and repair of driver-reported issues within this limited window, the next day’s speed restrictions persist, creating a vicious cycle. Extending journey times aims to break this cycle and ensure maintenance can be carried out effectively.
Operator-Specific Schedule Changes
To align with the new operational plan, all three operators have adjusted their train timetables accordingly:
Renfe: Starting February 2nd, the AVE trains departing from Madrid’s Atocha station at 20:27 and 21:07 to Barcelona, as well as the 21:05 service from Barcelona back to Madrid, have been canceled.
Ouigo: Has opted to merge services. Passengers originally scheduled to depart from Barcelona at 6:25 will be rebooked on the 7:35 train; passengers departing from Madrid at 21:02 will now take the 20:10 service. Both consolidated trains will operate with double units to increase capacity.
Iryo: Has initiated an “alternative transport plan” scheduled to run until February 7th. In addition to extending journey times by about 25 minutes, this plan cancels two commercial services: the 16:37 departure from Madrid and the 8:45 departure from Barcelona, to ensure overall operational stability.
