Benidorm Fest: The Evolution from its Origins in the 1950s to its Modern Revival
Spain’s national broadcaster RTVE featured a segment in its weekend news program looking back at the evolution of the Benidorm Fest from past to present. The music festival originated in the late 1950s, aiming to promote tourism in Benidorm and the Spanish music industry through a song competition. After nearly 50 years of development, despite several interruptions, it has launched numerous famous artists. Since 2022, its modern version, revived as Benidorm Fest, continues to hold a significant position in the Spanish pop music scene.
Origins and Early Development
The Benidorm International Song Festival was first held in 1959, inspired by Italy’s Sanremo Music Festival. Its main objective was to boost tourism in the coastal city of Benidorm while simultaneously promoting the development of Spanish domestic music. The inaugural competition attracted a large number of song entries, exceeding the organizers’ expectations. The festival quickly became a major summer cultural event and continued to be held until 2006, with interruptions only in a few years such as 1979, 1984, and from 1986 to 1992.
Golden Age and Representative Artists
In its nearly 50-year history, the Benidorm Fest became a platform for many Spanish singers to rise to fame. A young Raphael participated in performances, while Julio Iglesias won with his song ‘La vida sigue igual,’ launching his career. Famous hosts included Luis del Olmo and Concha Velasco, the latter of whom also starred in a film based on the festival. The ‘Sirenita de Oro’ (Golden Mermaid) trophy became an iconic symbol of the era, with Carlos Borroso winning the last traditional version in 2003.
Hiatus, Silence, and the Drive for Revival
After 2006, the original Benidorm International Song Festival was discontinued, leaving a void in the Spanish music scene for this traditional platform. It wasn’t until 2021 that RTVE, in collaboration with the local government, decided to revive the brand. In 2022, Benidorm Fest was officially launched. While it inherits the historical name and spirit, its positioning has been adjusted, becoming an independent music competition and resuming the use of the classic Sirenita de Oro trophy.
Characteristics and Impact of the Modern Benidorm Fest
The current Benidorm Fest is hosted by RTVE and has been held for several editions, entering its fifth edition by 2026. The competition brings together diverse musical styles, attracting a large number of new and established artists. It not only continues the tradition of promoting Spanish music but also expands its influence through a modern format. The program emphasizes that this music festival has evolved for over half a century, growing from a simple tourism promotion tool into a significant chapter in the history of Spanish pop music.
The evolution of the Benidorm Fest reflects the changing trajectory of the Spanish music industry over time.
