The Dark Side of an Elite Madrid School
The British Council School in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, an elite institution with tuition fees as high as €4,465 per term, is embroiled in a major bullying scandal. Several former students have come forward to expose a ‘social caste system’ based on family wealth and the school’s gross negligence in handling bullying incidents.
Cyberbullying and School Indifference
A student, using the pseudonym Cristo, described a traumatic experience. He was added to a WhatsApp group with children of prominent Spanish entrepreneurs and aristocrats, where he faced relentless homophobic and body-shaming abuse. Despite multiple reports to the school, the response was one of ‘complete disregard.’ Cristo stated that the perpetrators, known as ‘the untouchables,’ seemed to have immunity due to their powerful family connections. He was ultimately forced to transfer to a school in the UK to finish his high school education.
Expelled for Defending a Friend
Another student, Mónica, had an even more extreme experience. In 2022, after she advocated for a bullied friend, the school, instead of offering support, expelled her for ‘inappropriate conduct.’ This series of events led Mónica to develop severe anorexia nervosa, resulting in a weight loss of 13 kilograms. Her family has since filed a lawsuit against the school and several teachers, accusing them of ‘enabling bullying.’ The school not only denies the claims but has also attempted to countersue the family for an alleged ‘breach of confidentiality.’
A Pattern of Condoning and Its Consequences
Further cases show this was not an isolated problem. A student named Laura had nearly €400 stolen from her account by a classmate, and again, the school took no disciplinary action. One parent noted the school’s autocratic and non-transparent approach to resolving issues. Victims widely believe the school shows clear favoritism toward children of influential families, leaving students from ordinary backgrounds helpless when targeted. María José Fernández, president of the Madrid Anti-School Bullying Association, commented that this situation sends a dangerous message to society: ‘that bullies are the ones who succeed.’ As of this report, the school has been acquired by the Inspired Education Group, but neither its former nor current leadership has responded to the allegations.
