The high-speed AVE rail line between Madrid and Valencia has become a critical transportation artery since it began operations in 2010. Currently, some of Renfe’s AVE trains can complete the approximately 391-kilometer journey in as little as 1 hour and 35 minutes. A variety of operators provide diverse services, further enhancing the line’s connectivity and convenience.
History and Inauguration
The high-speed line officially began commercial operations on December 19, 2010, marking the expansion of Spain’s high-speed network into the Levante region. The project involved a massive investment aimed at shortening the travel time between Madrid and Valencia. Since then, the line has undergone continuous optimization and has been running reliably for over 15 years.
Current Services
Renfe’s AVE trains offer the fastest direct service at 1 hour and 35 minutes, while other services may take slightly longer depending on stops. Additionally, the low-cost high-speed service Avlo, along with private operators Iryo and Ouigo, also operate on this route, with average travel times of about 1 hour and 50 minutes to 1 hour and 58 minutes. Multiple daily services are available to meet passenger demand.
Passenger Transport Performance
As of the end of 2025, the line has transported a cumulative total of over 36.4 million passengers. In 2024 alone, the passenger count exceeded 5 million, demonstrating stable demand. Despite occasional disruptions from natural events, the line has consistently maintained a high level of ridership.
