Hey everyone on the forum! I’ve seen a lot of people asking about universities in the Andalusia region lately, so I thought I’d share my experience at my alma mater, the University of Almería.
I initially chose UAL partly because of the affordable tuition and living costs, and partly because I was drawn to its nickname, the ‘Sunniest City in Europe.’ And I can tell you, it was a decision I didn’t regret!
The UAL campus is very modern, and its location is absolutely incredible—it’s right on the Mediterranean coast! Imagine being able to walk a few steps to the beach and feel the sea breeze right after class. That’s an experience you won’t find at many other universities in Spain. The entire campus feels like a large park, with well-organized academic buildings, a library, and a sports center. The library has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sea. Sometimes, when I got tired of studying, I’d just look up at the ocean view, and it would instantly lift my spirits. Here’s a picture to give you a feel.

Academics and Majors
Academic Atmosphere
Academically, the pace at UAL is a bit more relaxed compared to universities in Madrid or Barcelona, and the relationship between professors and students is closer. There are many small classes, so you can approach your professors directly with questions, and they are always very patient. The university’s flagship programs are Agricultural Science and Environmental Studies, which makes sense since Almería is known as the ‘Vegetable Garden of Europe.’ For international students, the language center offers high-quality courses that are a great help in preparing for the DELE exam. I’ve put together a simple list of pros and cons for your reference:
| Pros | Cons |
| Low cost of living | Relatively small city |
| Excellent climate, plenty of sunshine | Public transport is less convenient than in major cities |
| Beautiful campus by the sea | Fewer internship and job opportunities |
| Relaxed and friendly academic atmosphere | Limited entertainment options |
Let’s talk about daily life. Almería is a really peaceful city. The cost of living is quite low for Spain, especially when it comes to rent and food. The Tapas culture here is amazing. While browsing the forums, I’ve seen discussions on all sorts of topics, even on Massey University in Spain. Here in Almería, when you order a drink, you get a free tapa, and sometimes, two or three rounds are enough for a full dinner. On weekends, you can go hiking in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. The volcanic landscapes and stunning beaches there are incredibly photogenic—every shot is a masterpiece. But to be honest, it doesn’t have the hustle and bustle of a big city. The nightlife is quite simple, so those who love a lively atmosphere might find it a bit boring quiet.
If you long for the Mediterranean sun and prefer a peaceful, comfortable learning environment with a low cost of living (perhaps unlike those researching options like Massey University’s master’s programs), then the University of Almería is a hidden gem. It may not be one of Spain’s top-ranked universities, but it can offer you a unique and sun-filled study abroad memory. I hope my sharing has been helpful for those of you choosing a university!
