I’ve seen a lot of forum posts lately about universities in Barcelona and Madrid, so today I want to share a lesser-known but real hidden gem: my alma mater, Rovira i Virgili University, or URV for short. It’s not in a major city; its main campus is in the picturesque coastal city of Tarragona, just about an hour’s train ride from Barcelona. It’s the perfect spot to be close to the action while enjoying a peaceful environment.
The biggest feeling I got from studying at URV was just how pleasant it is. Tarragona itself is a World Heritage City, filled with ancient Roman ruins, and you’re never far from a Mediterranean beach. When you’re tired from studying, you can catch a breeze by the sea or take a stroll through the old town—an experience you just can’t get in a big city. The university’s campus environment is also fantastic, with modern academic buildings blending perfectly with the city’s historic charm.

Top Programs and Academic Standing
While URV’s overall ranking might not be as high as the Complutense University of Madrid or the Autonomous University of Barcelona, it’s definitely a university that excels in specific fields. Its Chemistry and Chemical Engineering programs are highly ranked, not just in Spain but globally. Additionally, being located in Catalonia’s wine region and a major tourist destination, its Oenology (Winemaking) and Tourism Management are also flagship programs. If you want to study these subjects, URV is an option with outstanding value, which makes a lot of sense when you consider URV’s location.
Application and Student Experience
In terms of applications, the process for URV is similar to other Spanish public universities, but because there aren’t as many international applicants as in the big cities, the competition feels a little less intense. The classroom experience is also great. Many programs feature small class sizes, so professors can call on every student by name and there’s a lot of interaction. It’s not like some massive universities where you’re in a lecture hall with hundreds of students and the professor doesn’t even know who you are by the end of the semester. If you have academic questions, professors are also very quick to reply to emails. You never have to worry about being just another face in the crowd.
Breakdown of Living Costs
Speaking of value for money, living costs are definitely one of URV’s major advantages. The prices and rent in Tarragona are incredibly friendly compared to Barcelona and Madrid. Here’s a direct comparison:
| Item | Average Monthly Cost in Tarragona | Average Monthly Cost in Barcelona/Madrid |
| Single Room Rent | 250-350 Euros | 450-600 Euros |
| Food & Transport | 200-300 Euros | 300-450 Euros |
| Estimated Total | 450-650 Euros | 750-1050 Euros |
If you’re looking for a quiet and comfortable learning environment, want to delve deep into a specific academic field (perhaps even a PhD at URV), and are also on a budget, then URV is definitely an option worth serious consideration. Of course, its downsides are that the city is small, so internship and job opportunities are certainly fewer than in big cities, and its international recognition is also relatively lower. But it’s all about trade-offs! I hope my sharing helps everyone. Any alumni or prospective students out there? Feel free to leave a comment below to chat!
