Murcia Airport Expands Its European Route Network
According to an official announcement from the government of the Region of Murcia, starting in the summer of 2026, the Región de Murcia International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional de la Región de Murcia) will add two new direct flight routes to Italy and France. This initiative aims to enhance the region’s international connectivity and offer more travel options for both local residents and tourists.
New Route Details and Launch Date
The two new routes will be operated by the Spanish low-cost airline Volotea and are scheduled to launch on June 28, 2026. The details are as follows:
- Murcia - Venice (VCE): Two flights per week, on Wednesdays and Sundays. This marks the first-ever direct route connecting Murcia Airport with Italy.
- Murcia - Lille (LIL): Two flights per week, on Thursdays and Sundays. This route will strengthen the connection between Murcia and northern France.
These two new routes are expected to offer over 7,500 seats during the summer season.
A Historic Milestone and Fare Information
The launch of the Venice route is a significant milestone for Murcia, establishing the region’s first-ever direct commercial flight connection to Italy. In terms of pricing, the new routes are highly competitive. According to Volotea, one-way tickets for the general public start from €19, while members of its “Megavolotea Plus” program can find fares from as low as €9.
Market Impact and Development
Juan Francisco Martínez, the Minister of Tourism for the Region of Murcia, stated that the new routes will not only make it significantly easier for local residents to travel to popular destinations but are also expected to attract more tourists from Italy and France to Murcia, thereby boosting the local tourism industry.
This expansion is part of Murcia Airport’s continuous growth. Recent data shows the airport handled 949,000 passengers, a 4.3% increase over the previous year, with particularly strong growth in international travelers. Currently, Murcia Airport offers direct connections to 20 airports across 7 European countries.
