Ground Handling Strikes: Dates Announced for Two Major Companies
Travel during Spain’s 2026 Easter holiday faces major disruption. Following failed negotiations over pay and labor rights, employees of two major airport ground handling companies have announced strikes. Ground handling provider Groundforce has called an indefinite strike starting March 27. Simultaneously, organized by the UGT union, employees of Menzies Aviation plan several rounds of walkouts on March 28-29 and April 2-6. These actions will directly impact key ground services such as check-in, baggage handling, and aircraft parking and maintenance.
Scope of Impact: Major Hubs Face Paralysis Risk
The wave of strikes will have a wide-reaching and severe impact on Spain’s aviation system. The most affected airports will be the busiest ones, including Madrid-Barajas (MAD), Barcelona-El Prat (BCN), Palma de Mallorca (PMI), and major tourist destination airports such as Málaga (AGP), Alicante (ALC), and Seville (SVQ). Additionally, regional airports in the Canary Islands, Bilbao, and Santiago de Compostela will not be spared. Although the Spanish government will establish ‘minimum services,’ widespread flight delays, cancellations, and baggage handling chaos are still expected during the peak Easter travel period.

Adding to the Chaos: Meteorological Agency Joins the Strike
Complicating matters further, employees of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) also plan to strike on March 29 and April 3. The meteorologists’ core demands are for higher wages and for the government to hire 800 additional staff to address chronic shortages. The disruption of meteorological services will not only weaken weather support for aviation, increasing flight safety risks, but also affect weather forecasting for the various traditional religious processions held during Holy Week.
Advice for Travelers
For those planning to travel during this period, it is recommended to take the following precautions:
- Track Your Flight Status: Continuously monitor the latest flight updates on airline official websites or apps.
- Arrive Extra Early: It is advisable to get to the airport much earlier than usual to prepare for potentially long waits for check-in and security.
- Travel Light: If possible, travel with carry-on luggage only to reduce the risk of checked baggage delays, mishandling, or loss due to the ground staff strike.
- Have a Backup Plan: Plan alternative travel arrangements in advance in case of potential flight cancellations.
- Check Your Travel Insurance: Verify if your travel insurance policy covers extra expenses incurred from trip delays or cancellations caused by strikes.
