Family Dispute Escalates into a Shooting
The security situation in the North Zone of Alicante, Spain, remains tense. Around 7 PM local time on March 23, a shooting incident sparked by a family dispute occurred in the Virgen del Carmen neighborhood.
The incident took place in front of an apartment building on Calle Diputado Joaquín Galant. According to reports, a 47-year-old Spanish man was in a heated argument with his sister. During the altercation, her nephew, around 20 years old, retrieved a gun from upstairs and shot his uncle in the neck. The suspect and his family quickly fled the scene.
The victim has been taken to the Doctor Balmis General Hospital in Alicante for treatment. The bullet passed through his neck, but his condition is currently stable and not life-threatening. The Spanish National Police (Policía Nacional) have opened an investigation and are conducting a full-scale manhunt for the fugitive suspect, who they suspect may have already fled the province of Alicante.
Spike in Violent Incidents in the North Zone
This shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Alicante’s North Zone. The area has experienced a string of serious crimes in a short period, posing a severe challenge to local public safety.
- Fatal Stray Bullet Incident: A few days prior, in the neighboring El Pla district, a man of Colombian nationality was fatally struck by a stray bullet while on his own balcony. The incident is believed to be related to gang conflict.
- Street Machete Attack: On the afternoon of March 18, at the intersection of Calle Fidel Pastor Carrillo and Calle Felipe Herrero Arias, a man attacked another man with a large, long-handled machete. The victim suffered severe cuts to his head and body. The attacker was later jailed for “attempted homicide.”
Police Increase Patrols to Tackle Public Safety Challenges
In response to the successive violent conflicts, the Alicante National Police have significantly increased preventive patrols in key areas, including the North Zone. Current law enforcement efforts are primarily focused on combating drug trafficking, addressing violence stemming from family disputes, and cracking down on the illegal possession of weapons.
This series of events has sparked widespread concern among local residents about community safety. Police are urging the public to remain vigilant, leave the scene immediately, and avoid spectating if they witness large gatherings or heated arguments, to ensure their personal safety.
