Spike in Easter Thefts in Spain: Retail Sector Loses Nearly €600 Million Annually, Olive Oil Becomes a New Target
Easter is a major holiday in Spain, bringing a peak in commercial activity. However, the increased foot traffic and crowded stores also create opportunities for criminal activity, leading to a significant rise in theft losses for retailers, directly impacting their profits.
Alarming Losses: Nearly €600 Million in Annual “Inventory Shrinkage”
According to the “Retail Distribution Theft Barometer” report by global retail solutions provider Checkpoint Systems, Spanish retail businesses suffer a cumulative loss of €591 million annually due to theft, administrative errors, and supplier fraud. This figure, known as “inventory shrinkage,” accounts for approximately 1.1% of the total turnover of Spanish distribution companies.
The report specifically highlights that the Easter holiday is a peak period for theft, with about 21% of all annual theft incidents occurring during this time. This indicates that behind the bustling holiday scene lies a significant business security risk.
Shoplifter Profile: Repeat Offenders Becoming More Violent
Of all external theft cases, 51% are committed by “repeat offenders,” defined as individuals who commit theft at least three times a year. Alarmingly, security experts warn that these professional shoplifters are becoming increasingly aggressive, posing a greater security threat to businesses and employees.
In terms of the value per incident, the average loss from each theft is approximately €195. However, the data also shows that the vast majority (83%) of theft cases involve amounts less than €150, indicating a pattern of high-frequency, low-value incidents.
Most Stolen Items During Easter: Olive Oil Tops the List
Research shows that the most “popular” items for thieves during Easter are largely consistent with the year-round trend, although some categories are particularly prominent. Surprisingly, cooking oil, whose price has soared in recent years, has become the most coveted stolen product.
The specific list of most-stolen items is as follows:
- Food and Beverages: Besides cooking oil, canned goods, smoked foods, cured meats (like Iberian ham), and cheeses are also highly targeted. Wine and spirits are also prime targets.
- Apparel and Footwear: Footwear is the most stolen item, followed by underwear and intimate apparel.
- Personal Care and Cosmetics: Perfumes and fragrances are the easiest targets for theft.
- Electronics: Headphones are the electronic product with the highest theft rate, followed by smartphones.
- DIY and Hardware: Light bulbs are the most stolen hardware item.
