According to the latest data released by the Spanish government, the country’s labor market reached a significant milestone in March. The number of people registered with the Social Security system, after seasonal adjustment, historically surpassed the 22 million mark, demonstrating strong growth momentum.
Employment Data Shows Widespread Improvement

Data shows that the number of unemployed people in Spain decreased by 23,000 in March, keeping the overall unemployment level at its lowest point since 2008. This positive trend means that compared to the same period last year, a net total of 524,501 jobs were created nationwide, a significant growth rate.
More notably, compared to March 2019, before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Spain’s current Social Security system has nearly 3 million more members. This indicates that the country has not only fully recovered from the pandemic’s impact on the job market but has also surpassed its pre-pandemic levels.
Positive Assessment from Government Leadership
The Spanish government has highly praised this achievement. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated via social media that this result is thanks to all the workers who strive, take responsibility, and drive the country’s progress, calling them “the best team Spain has.”
The Minister for Social Security, Elma Saiz, emphasized the profound impact of this achievement on the social security system. She pointed out that strong employment growth will directly increase the revenue base for the pension system, providing more substantial resources for the entire social security framework and thus guaranteeing future pension payments and the rights of beneficiaries.
A Reflection of Economic Recovery and Policy Effectiveness
Analysts widely believe that the record-breaking employment figures for March are not only strong evidence of Spain’s sustained economic recovery but also reflect the significant resilience of its labor market. Furthermore, this indirectly confirms that the government’s recent labor market policies have been remarkably effective in promoting job creation, laying a solid foundation for long-term, stable economic development.
