Summary
Recently, the public safety situation in the Usera district of Madrid, the Spanish capital, has drawn public attention. In early April, the area witnessed a series of suspected arson attacks and a large-scale mass brawl, resulting in property damage and several arrests. The Spanish National Police (Policía Nacional) is now fully engaged in a thorough investigation into the two separate incidents.
Two Fires Point to Arson
According to a report from a Madrid television station on April 7, two fires broke out almost simultaneously at two locations less than 100 meters apart in the Usera district, with strong indications that they were not accidental.
The first fire occurred on Amparo Usera street, believed to have originated from a pile of wooden planks. The flames then spread, damaging two nearby parked cars. Just five minutes later, the fire department received another alert and rushed to the neighboring Hermenegildo Bielsa street. The fire there was more severe, completely destroying several waste collection containers and a car. The flames also damaged the exterior facade of a gaming hall, causing visible harm.
Given the close proximity in time and location of the two fires, investigators have preliminarily concluded there is a high suspicion of arson. The investigation is ongoing.
12 Arrested After Mass Brawl at Entertainment Venue
Two days before the arson incidents, around 11:00 AM on Friday, April 5, a violent mass brawl also took place in the Usera district.
The incident occurred inside an all-night entertainment venue at number 20 on Amor Hermoso street. Spanish National Police officers quickly arrived at the scene after being alerted and found two groups engaged in a heated conflict. According to police sources, glasses and bottles were used as weapons during the altercation, resulting in several injuries. The chaos briefly spilled from inside the venue onto the street.
Police arrested a total of 12 individuals involved in the incident, including one minor. Those arrested face charges for their alleged participation in a mass brawl (delito de riña tumultuaria). A preliminary check revealed that the individuals have diverse nationalities, including Spanish, Colombian, Peruvian, and Bolivian.
After an initial investigation, the police have ruled out any connection between the event and organized violent youth gangs. However, the specific cause of the conflict and the exact responsibilities of each party are still under investigation.
