Lately, in various online groups and forums, I’ve seen a lot of buzz about “professor” or “researcher” title programs from UCAM (Universidad Católica de Murcia). They’re being heavily promoted with claims of rapidly enhancing one’s academic profile. Honestly, I was curious too, so I did some in-depth research into Spanish university academic ranks to understand it better. I’m starting this thread today to share my findings, hoping to help others avoid potential pitfalls. I also welcome anyone with experience to join the discussion.
What Exactly is a “Título Propio”?
First, let’s clarify a core concept: these titles from UCAM fall under the category of “university-specific degrees/titles” (Títulos Propios) within the Spanish education system, not “official degrees/titles” (Títulos Oficiales). This is a type of course or program that Spanish universities can create independently. The university itself issues the certificate, which confirms you have completed specific studies or research, unlike the official professor ranks which are nationally regulated. Its characteristics are flexibility, speed, and relatively low entry barriers. However, it does not count towards the official national academic ranking system in Spain. To put it simply, the university recognizes you, but at the national level, it doesn’t automatically equate to a professor position within the civil service system.
To make it clearer, I’ve created a simple comparison table:
| Feature | Título Propio (University-Issued Title) | Título Oficial (Official Academic Rank) |
| Issuing Body | Issued directly by the university | Certified by the National Ministry of Education, then appointed by the university |
| Legal Validity | Valid within the university; social recognition depends on the employer | Officially recognized throughout Spain and the EU |
| Application Difficulty | Relatively low, primarily based on document review | Extremely high, requires a PhD, extensive research output, and a public defense |
| Primary Purpose | To enhance a personal resume, for business endorsements, knowledge updating | To hold a teaching and research position at a public university |
So, is this kind of title useful? I don’t think there’s a one-size-fits-all answer. If you aim to pursue a purely academic career, with the goal of becoming a professor at a public university in Spain or another European country, then this program is definitely not for you. However, if your goal is to boost your personal brand, add an academic credential to your business profile or resume for networking and marketing purposes, it does offer a shortcut. Its value lies more in the commercial sphere and personal image building than as a hard currency in the academic world.

UCAM’s Título Propio program is, in itself, legitimate and a format permitted by the Spanish education system. The key is for applicants to be clear about their own needs and to understand the nature and scope of this “title”. Don’t harbor unrealistic expectations, thinking that money can buy you an officially recognized university professor status. Are there any members here who have already applied for this?
