Spain’s Only Beach on the World’s 50 Best List
In the latest “World’s 50 Best Beaches” international ranking, Playa de Rodas on the Cíes Islands (Islas Cíes) in Spain’s Galicia region has secured a spot, making it the country’s only coastline to receive this honor this year. The beach was praised by judges as “the closest thing to a Caribbean-style coast in Europe,” sharing the list with world-class beaches from countries like Greece, the Philippines, and Australia.
Location and Natural Features
Playa de Rodas is situated in the Atlantic Ocean and forms a core part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia Maritime-Terrestrial National Park (Parque Nacional Marítimo-Terrestre de las Islas Atlánticas de Galicia). This crescent-shaped beach, approximately 700 meters long, connects two separate islands. It is renowned for its iconic fine white sand and crystal-clear, calm waters resembling a tropical bay, a unique natural landscape that makes it stand out.

Strict Conservation: The Key to Selection
The successful inclusion of Rodas Beach is intrinsically linked to its strict ecological conservation and visitor management model. As a protected area within a national park, the site enforces a strict cap on visitor numbers. Visitors must apply for a permit in advance and can only access the islands during specific seasons via officially designated boats. This protection-first access system is precisely what has preserved the beach’s pristine ecosystem and became a core factor in its high recognition in the international selection.
Sustainability: A New Criterion for World-Class Destinations
This year’s selection process looked beyond natural beauty, incorporating sustainability and ecological protection as crucial evaluation criteria. The case of Rodas Beach demonstrates that a “low-development, high-protection” management model can also create a world-class tourist destination. Its inclusion on the list highlights the growing importance of respecting and protecting the natural environment in modern tourism, offering a successful “fewer tourists, stronger protection” model for other destinations worldwide.
