Decoding the Latest QS Rankings for Spanish Universities
Have you seen the freshly released 2025 QS World University Rankings? Every year around this time, those of us already in Spain or planning to study here eagerly watch how Spanish universities perform. This year’s rankings feel familiar, but with a few pleasant surprises!
Madrid vs. Barcelona: A Clash of Titans
Unsurprisingly, the top spots in Spanish higher education are still dominated by universities in Madrid and Barcelona. The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) has had a particularly impressive performance this year, claiming the top position in Spain. It is closely followed by the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Barcelona. These institutions are consistent fixtures in the world’s top 200, a testament to their undeniable quality. That said, rankings are just one factor to consider, so there’s no need to stress too much. Choosing a city and a university atmosphere that suits you might be even more important.

A Quick Look at Spain’s Top 8 Universities
Here’s a table of the Spanish universities that made it into the world’s top 300, for a quick reference:

When choosing a university, don’t just focus on the overall rankings. The QS evaluation criteria are diverse, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, and more. Some universities, like the University of Deusto, might not have the highest overall rank but are top-tier in specific fields. For instance, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the Polytechnic University of Madrid are exceptionally strong in engineering. Therefore, judging a university solely by its fame is one-sided. It’s crucial to research based on your field of study, as subject-specific rankings can sometimes be more valuable than overall rankings
