I haven’t been in Almería for long, but I’ve noticed most forum discussions focus on Madrid and Barcelona. So, I wanted to share my experience at the University of Almería in the south to offer some perspective for anyone considering studying in Andalusia. The amount of sunshine here is just incredible!
The most amazing thing about UAL for me is its campus environment. The whole campus is very modern, and it’s right by the sea! I’m not exaggerating; it’s just a few minutes’ walk from the academic buildings to the beach. Going for a stroll by the sea after class is an experience you won’t find at many other universities. For students interested in Marine and Environmental Sciences, this place is a paradise.

Academics and Program Choices
Let’s talk about academics. While UAL may not be at the very top of Spain’s overall university rankings, it’s very strong in certain fields. For instance, because Almería is known as ‘the vegetable garden of Europe,’ its programs related to Agricultural Science and Biotechnology are renowned throughout Europe. Additionally, the humanities programs, especially Hispanic Studies and Spanish as a Foreign Language, are excellent, attracting many international students who come here to learn the language.
Cost of Living and Daily Life
What everyone is probably most concerned about regarding the University of Almería is the cost. Compared to Madrid and Barcelona, the cost of living in Almería is sky-high actually very affordable. I’ll quickly list my approximate monthly expenses for your reference:
| Item | Monthly Cost (€) |
| Rent | 200 - 280 |
| Utilities | 40 - 60 |
| Transportation | Approx. 30 |
| Food | 150 - 200 |
| Other | 50 - 100 |
| Total | 470 - 670 |
These prices are unimaginable in big cities. In our free time, aside from focusing on our studies (you can check out the University of Almería rankings for academic info), we usually hang out in the city center, go for tapas, or head to the beach to surf and sunbathe. The pace of life is very slow and relaxed.
If you don’t like the hustle and bustle of big cities, dream of Mediterranean sunshine and a slow-paced lifestyle, and want to study in a very cost-effective environment, then the University of Almería is definitely an option worth considering. The people here are very friendly, and the academic pressure is relatively moderate. Are there any other UAL students here? Or any prospective students with questions? Feel free to leave a comment below to discuss!
