Fatal Street Confrontation After Midnight
Just before midnight last Saturday, a serious violent incident occurred on Cera street in downtown Barcelona. A Moroccan man was critically injured with a knife during a confrontation and, despite being rushed to the hospital, ultimately died from his injuries. The Barcelona Guardia Urbana (city police) quickly intervened, successfully identifying and arresting a minor involved in the case.
The Incident’s Origin: A Robbery on a Bar Terrace
According to police, the homicide is believed to have stemmed from a robbery. Shortly before the stabbing, a couple was robbed on the terrace of a bar in the Sant Antoni district by a group of five Moroccan men. After the robbery, the group fled towards the Raval district. A few streets away, at the intersection with Ronda de Sant Pau, one of the robbers got into a violent altercation with a minor, which culminated in the fatal stabbing. Police preliminarily believe the minor who committed the act was one of the victims of the earlier robbery.
Minor Suspect Detained Pending Trial
The arrested suspect is reportedly a Colombian minor. He was formally handed over to the Juvenile Court of Barcelona (Juzgado de Menores de Barcelona) on Sunday. Given the severity of the case, the court has ordered the teenager to be held in a secure juvenile detention center (centro de menores en régimen cerrado) while he faces an investigation for suspected homicide. Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area and searching for more witnesses to clarify the full sequence of events and specific details.
Spate of Homicides in Catalonia within 24 Hours
Notably, this was the second violent homicide in the Catalonia region within 24 hours. On the morning of the same day (last Saturday), in the city of Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona province), a young Chinese woman was killed on the street by a Moroccan man. A 58-year-old man who tried to intervene was also injured in the process. The Catalan regional police (Mossos d’Esquadra) are now conducting full investigations into these two separate incidents to determine their precise motives.
