Bizum Pay to Officially Launch on May 18
Bizum, Spain’s leading instant transfer service launched in 2016, is about to reach a major milestone. The company has announced the official launch of ‘Bizum Pay’, its payment feature for physical retail, starting May 18, 2026. This new service expands Bizum’s scope from peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers to the offline commercial payment sector, giving a new dimension to the popular phrase ’I’ll Bizum you’.

A Seamless and Integrated Contactless Payment Experience
The core advantage of Bizum Pay lies in its convenience and integration. Users will not need to download any new applications; the feature will be directly integrated into the existing mobile banking apps of major Spanish banks. Activation is simple and can be done within the user’s preferred banking app.
For payments, Bizum Pay utilizes the same NFC (Near Field Communication) technology as mainstream mobile payment solutions like Apple Pay and Google Pay, enabling ‘contactless’ payments. This means that at checkout, users can complete their payment simply by holding their phone near the payment terminal, mirroring the process of using a phone with a linked bank card.
A Potential Reshaping of Merchant Payment Costs
While the user experience is similar to other contactless payment methods, the introduction of Bizum Pay could mean more tangible benefits for merchants. Currently, the vast majority of in-store card transactions in Spain are processed through the American networks of Visa or Mastercard, for which merchants pay a percentage-based fee.
Financial experts suggest that as a domestic Spanish payment system, Bizum has greater autonomy in setting its merchant fees. It is widely anticipated that to attract merchants and expand its market share, Bizum Pay will offer lower transaction fees than Visa and Mastercard. If this prediction holds true, large retailers with high transaction volumes, such as supermarkets and department stores, will have a strong incentive to adopt and promote this new payment method.
Strategic Importance: Reducing Reliance on External Financial Systems
The launch of Bizum Pay is more than just a business model expansion; it carries significant strategic weight. By establishing a domestic offline payment network independent of the traditional international card organizations, Spain can reduce its commercial and financial system’s dependence on the two major US payment giants (Visa and Mastercard). This move is poised to enhance the independence and resilience of the nation’s financial infrastructure, keeping more transaction processing profits within the country.
