Market Trend: Prices Retreat from Highs

Recently, Spain’s olive oil market has seen a significant shift. Prices for what consumers call “liquid gold” had previously soared to between €12 and €15 per liter, putting considerable pressure on household budgets. However, according to the latest market monitoring data, this upward trend has reversed. Olive oil prices have begun to fall steadily, especially for Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra, or AOVE), which has now dropped below the key psychological price point of €5 per liter in several retail channels.
Early Year Price Drops: Mercadona Leads the Way
According to an analysis of shelf prices in major Spanish supermarkets from January to April 2026 by the specialized agency Olimerca, the supermarket chain Mercadona has been the most active in this price reduction trend. The data shows that Mercadona significantly adjusted the prices of its private label Hacendado olive oils:
- Intense Olive Oil: The price per liter was reduced from €4.35 in January to €4.15 by the end of April, a decrease of 6.7%.
- Mild Olive Oil: The price per liter dropped from €4.10 to €3.90, a decrease of 4.87%.
During the same period, other large supermarket chains such as Alcampo, Ahorramás, and Carrefour followed suit, with price cuts generally ranging from 4.6% to 4.9%. However, the report also noted that during the observation period from January to April, the supermarkets DIA and Hipercor had not yet adjusted their olive oil prices.
