Case Revisited: From Hiking Accident to Murder Allegation
On December 14, 2024, Isak Andic, the billionaire founder of the Spanish fashion brand Mango, tragically fell to his death from a cliff approximately 150 meters high while hiking in the Montserrat mountain range in the province of Barcelona. At the time of the incident, only Andic and his eldest son, Jonathan Andic, were present at the scene.
Based on the initial investigation, judicial authorities and the police classified the case as an unfortunate hiking accident and quickly closed it. However, this conclusion was quietly overturned several months later.
Police Reopen Investigation: Focusing on the Sole Witness
The turning point in the case occurred in March 2025. The Criminal Investigation Division of the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police) decided to intervene and reopen the investigation. For over a year, the police secretly focused their investigation on Jonathan Andic, the only other person present at the time, suspecting his direct involvement in his father’s death.
On May 19, 2026, after a lengthy investigation, the police formally arrested Jonathan and brought him to a court in Martorell to await a closed-door hearing before a judge.
Key to the Investigation: Contradictory Testimonies and Scene Discrepancies
Police suspicion is primarily based on Jonathan’s contradictory statements. According to investigators, during multiple interviews, Jonathan provided seriously conflicting accounts of key details, such as ‘his exact location when his father fell,’ ‘the parking lot where the vehicle was parked,’ and ‘whether photos were taken during the hike.’
Furthermore, criminal investigators, after repeated examinations of the scene on the Collbató cave trail, pointed out that the terrain’s specific structure makes it extremely difficult for an adult to accidentally fall from the cliff while walking normally, unless pushed by an external force. To gather more evidence, police legally confiscated Jonathan’s mobile phone at the end of 2025 and conducted a thorough data recovery and analysis.
Motive Remains a Mystery: Denials from Family and Business Community
During the investigation, police explored potential motives, with the main hypothesis being a fierce conflict between father and son over the distribution of the vast family fortune or control of the company. However, this speculation has been unanimously denied by members of the Andic family.
Isak Andic’s widow, his other two daughters, and senior executives within the company all stated during police questioning that the father-son relationship was harmonious and free of the conflicts speculated by the public. Several influential figures in the Spanish business world, including the chairman of Banco Sabadell and the chairman of the Planeta Group, had previously publicly vouched for Jonathan’s character, arguing it was inappropriate for the police to presume the guilt of a victim’s family member without conclusive evidence. The latest developments in the case have caused a major shock and sparked widespread discussion in Spanish society.
