Hey everyone! I’ve been a lurker here for a while and noticed many prospective students asking about the Audiovisual Communication program at UC3M, often just called the AV program. As a senior currently studying at the Getafe campus, I felt compelled to start a thread and share some real insights. Hope this helps!
So, why did I choose UC3M? It’s simple: its ranking and reputation! The university’s communication department is one of the best in Spain, especially with its impressive performance in the QS rankings. Moreover, Carlos III University of Madrid is highly international, allowing you to connect with students and professors from all over the world. The Getafe campus itself has a fantastic academic atmosphere, with a strong focus on humanities and social sciences.
Regarding the curriculum, the AV program at UC3M truly strikes a great balance between theory and practice. The first and second years are heavy on foundational theory courses like communication theory, film history, and semiotics. It can be a bit dry, but it’s crucial for building a solid foundation. From the third year onwards, practical courses become more frequent. You’ll work in groups to shoot short films, produce radio shows, and write scripts. The professors are quite demanding, but you genuinely learn a lot. Last semester, we just finished shooting a documentary, and from pre-production to post-production, it was exhausting but incredibly rewarding!
Speaking of practice, I have to mention the university’s excellent facilities. The media building on the Getafe campus is equipped with professional photography studios, recording booths, and post-production labs, and the equipment is updated quite regularly. Students can use all of this for free, as long as you book in advance. I personally love spending time in their post-production labs—the iMacs with the full Adobe Creative Suite are an editor’s dream.

For those of you thinking of applying, here’s a quick summary. I’ve made a simple table to make it clearer.
