Hey everyone! I’ve seen many folks on the forum asking about choosing a university in Spain. As a seasoned student at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), much like in this post about the student experience near Camp Nou, I’m starting this thread to share my honest experience studying at ‘la Complu.’ Hopefully, this can be a helpful reference for future students.
Campus and Atmosphere: More Than Just Big
When I first arrived, I was truly amazed by the size of UCM. The main campus, Ciudad Universitaria, is so large you need to take a bus to get around. The greenery is fantastic, with lawns and woods everywhere. On sunny days, you’ll see many people reading or chatting on the grass, creating a perfect blend of academic and relaxed vibes. The architectural styles are also diverse, ranging from classic stone-built faculty buildings to modern, sleek department buildings.

The picture above is the Faculty of Medicine, one of its landmark buildings. Doesn’t it have a great historical feel?
Academics and Programs: A Haven for Humanities Students
As one of Spain’s top public universities, UCM’s academic strength is undeniable, especially in the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Health Sciences, where it is a national leader. For example, programs like Journalism, Media Studies, Spanish Philology, Fine Arts, History, Pharmacy, and Medicine are all top-tier.
I’ve put together a list of some strong faculties and their top programs for your reference:
| Faculty | Examples of Top Programs |
| Filología | Estudios Ingleses, Filología Hispánica |
| Ciencias de la Información | Periodismo, Comunicación Audiovisual |
| Bellas Artes | Bellas Artes, Diseño |
| Farmacia | Farmacia |
| Medicina | Medicina, Odontología |
Tips for Student Life
Academically, the library resources are incredibly rich. Each faculty has its own library, and the main library is enormous. But, during finals season, make sure to get there early to grab a seat! In terms of daily life, the cafeterias in the Ciudad Universitaria are reasonably priced, but the food can get repetitive. There are tons of campus activities—clubs, lectures, parties—so you’ll never be bored if you’re willing to get involved. For transportation, Metro Line 6 takes you directly to the university campus, which is very convenient. However, as for administrative efficiency at Spanish universities… well, you know how it is. Be patient and prepare in advance when dealing with paperwork.
Studying at Complutense University is a truly valuable experience. You not only receive a high-quality education but also grow in a vibrant environment steeped in history. It might not be perfect, but it’s absolutely worth it. If you have any other questions, like about application details or renting advice, feel free to leave a comment below. I’ll reply when I see it! ¡Bienvenidos a la Complu
