Hello everyone! I was recently helping a friend look for universities. Besides considering program rankings and living costs, which you can explore in this post about the wealthiest universities in Spain, a question suddenly popped into my head: Which Spanish universities are the wealthiest? After all, a large budget could mean better facilities, more research funding, and more distinguished professors. So, I did a little digging, and the results were quite interesting. I’m sharing what I found with all of you.

When we talk about ‘wealthy,’ we’re mainly referring to a university’s total annual budget. This figure generally reflects the institution’s size, its available resources, and the priority given to it by the government, a topic further detailed in this look into Spain’s wealthiest universities. The data is primarily based on figures from the Spanish University Foundation and other official publications. I’ve compiled a simple Top 5 list to give you a clear overview.
Spain’s University “Rich List”
Annual Budget Ranking for 2023
| Rank | University Name | Annual Budget |
| 1 | Complutense University of Madrid | 6.7 |
| 2 | University of Granada | 5.5 |
| 3 | University of Seville | 5.4 |
| 4 | University of Barcelona | 4.6 |
| 5 | Polytechnic University of Valencia | 4.5 |
Seeing this ranking, it’s not surprising that Complutense University of Madrid is at the top, given its status as a massive university in the capital. However, I was a bit surprised to see the University of Granada and the University of Seville, both from Andalusia, following so closely and even surpassing the University of Barcelona. This money is primarily spent on areas like faculty and staff salaries, research projects, facility maintenance, and international collaborations. In theory, a higher budget means students can enjoy more abundant resources, both in terms of facilities and academic support.
However, this raises a question: Does being wealthy necessarily mean better teaching quality? Not necessarily. Many smaller, specialized universities, like Pompeu Fabra University, have very strong research capabilities and international reputations in many fields, even if their total budgets aren’t as staggering. Therefore, this ‘rich list’ should only be considered one point of reference; it should not be the sole criterion for choosing a university. When making your choice, it’s essential to consider your major, interests, and career plans.
