Mercadona Adjusts Hours for Peak Tourist Season
Spanish supermarket giant Mercadona has announced that to meet the increased consumer demand during the summer tourist season, it will implement special summer opening hours for some of its stores from June 22 to August 30, 2024. This adjustment affects approximately 320 supermarkets in coastal and major tourist destinations, aiming to provide more convenient shopping services for the influx of tourists in July and August.

Weekday Closing Time Extended to 10 PM
Under this summer schedule, the 320 affected stores will operate from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Monday to Saturday. Compared to the usual 9:30 PM closing time, this extends the opening hours by half an hour. This change considers the habits of tourists who often shop in the evening after a day of sightseeing, providing a more flexible purchasing window.
A Break from Tradition: Opening on Sundays and Holidays
The most notable change in this adjustment is Mercadona’s break from its long-standing policy of closing on Sundays and public holidays. During the summer period, these specific stores in tourist areas will open on Sunday mornings until 3:00 PM. This move greatly benefits tourists arriving or departing over the weekend, meeting their needs for last-minute grocery shopping.
Covering Major Tourist Hotspots
The stores with adjusted hours are mainly concentrated in Spain’s most popular coastal tourist areas. These include locations such as Cullera, Benidorm, Dénia, Jávea, and Peñíscola in the Valencian Community; Marbella in Andalusia; Ibiza in the Balearic Islands; Salou and Lloret de Mar in Catalonia; and Sanxenxo in Galicia.
Friendly Reminder: Check Specific Store Information Before You Go
It is important to note that this time change only applies to about one-fifth of Mercadona’s more than 1,600 stores across Spain. Other stores not included in the summer schedule will maintain their regular opening hours. Therefore, Mercadona officially advises all customers to check the specific opening times for their nearby stores via the official website or mobile app before heading out to avoid any inconvenience.
