Hello everyone! I’ve seen a lot of posts on the forums about universities in Madrid and Barcelona, so today I want to share about a less-known but real gem—the University of León. I’ve been here for a few years and wanted to provide some firsthand insights for future students. Hope this helps!
The main Vegazana campus of the University of León has a fantastic environment. It’s very green with modern buildings, unlike some older universities with outdated facilities. The whole campus has a comfortable and peaceful feel, perfect for focusing on your studies. While it’s not a giant like the Complutense University of Madrid, it’s a case of ‘small but perfectly formed’—it has everything you need, from libraries and gyms to cafeterias. The academic atmosphere is great, and everyone is very friendly, except during exam weeks.

In terms of academic programs, the university’s flagship program is Veterinary Medicine, which is renowned in Spain and even across Europe, with very high admission requirements. Additionally, its Aerospace Engineering, Biotechnology, and various humanities and social science programs are also quite strong. For students who want to focus on learning Spanish, the university’s Language Center offers high-quality courses with dedicated teachers and small class sizes, allowing for rapid progress.
A Look at the Cost of Living in León
When it comes to daily life, the biggest advantage of León is its low cost of living! Compared to Madrid or Barcelona, it’s a paradise. Rent and general prices are very friendly, which can save you a lot of money each month. I have put together a table of approximate expenses to give you a clearer picture (for its academic standing, you can check the University of León rankings):
| Item | Approx. Monthly Cost (€) |
| Shared Room Rent | 180 - 250 |
| Food Expenses | 150 - 200 |
| Transport & Communication | 30 - 50 |
| Leisure & Entertainment | 50 - 100+ |
León is a very livable city. It is a historic place with a spectacular cathedral and a building by Gaudí. It’s also very safe, so you can walk around at night without worry. Most importantly, León is one of Spain’s famous capitals of tapas; when you order a drink, you get a free tapa, which is just amazing! If you dislike the hustle and bustle of big cities and want to experience authentic Spanish culture while being able to focus on your studies, then the University of León is definitely an option worth considering.
