Hey everyone! A new international student in Spain reporting for duty! Before I came here, I was so stressed about what clothes to pack, terrified of looking too much like a tourist or just not fitting in. After a few months of people-watching on the campus of the Complutense University of Madrid, I’m here to share my observations on Spanish university student style!
Overall Style: Casual is the Eternal Theme
Unlike the more polished styles you might see at some universities back home, daily wear for Spanish students is all about being casual and comfortable. It’s basically a mix-and-match of jeans, casual trousers, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and sneakers. They really love their sneakers—whether it’s Nike, Adidas, or the local brand Camper, everyone seems to own several pairs. A single casual outfit works for any occasion, from class to the library, and even to a bar for a drink. It feels like they prioritize fabric quality and fit over flashy patterns.

Affordable Fast Fashion is the Top Choice
As the homeland of fast-fashion giant Inditex Group, it’s no surprise that a lot of Spanish university student clothing comes from their brands. They’re affordable and always on-trend, so what’s not to love? If you want to blend in quickly, you can’t go wrong by checking out these stores.
| Brand | Features | Recommended Buys |
| Zara | More design-focused, slightly more mature | Blazers, dresses, statement blouses |
| Pull&Bear | Streetwear, California vibe, great for everyone | Graphic tees, sweatshirts, denim series |
| Bershka | Younger and trendier, perfect for a bold look | Crop tops, cargo pants, party wear |
| Stradivarius | Feminine and fresh style | Floral dresses, knitwear, accessories |
But this doesn’t mean they don’t dress up! Come Thursday or Friday night, when it’s time to salir de fiesta (go out partying), the vibe completely shifts. Guys will put on a crisp shirt, and girls will show up in all sorts of stylish dresses and heels, looking completely different from their daytime campus selves. So, when it comes to dressing for Spanish university, it’s a good idea to pack one or two nice outfits for more formal occasions or your clubbing armor.
All in all, when you come to study in Spain, there’s no need to stress too much about your wardrobe
