For all of you who have just arrived in Spain, are you like me, unable to resist all the delicious Jamón, Paella, Tapas…? After all the daily feasting, the number on my scale has become more and more delightful horrifying. After some serious thought, I’ve decided to make fitness a priority! After doing some research, I found that for us international students, the university’s own gym is simply the best bang for your buck.
So why choose the university gym first? The reasons are simple: it’s cheap and convenient. The annual or semester fees for most university gyms are very student-friendly, and compared to commercial gyms that can easily cost 30-40 euros a month, it’s a real bargain. Plus, the gym is usually right on campus or nearby, so you can go straight after class. This perfectly solves the age-old problem of ‘the gym is too far away,’ leaving you with no more excuses for being lazy! Most importantly, it’s a great place to meet new people, both local and international students. You get to exercise and socialize at the same time.
What everyone cares about most is the facilities. Taking public universities like the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Barcelona as examples, while the gym facilities might not be as fancy as high-end commercial chains, they are definitely adequate. You’ll find basic cardio and weightlifting areas, and usually a multi-purpose room for group classes like yoga, Zumba, and Pilates. Some universities even have swimming pools and climbing walls!

Before You Sign Up: University Gym vs. Commercial Gym
To give you a clearer picture, I’ve put together a simple comparison table. I even found a discussion about free gyms at Spanish universities, which can help you decide based on your needs.
| Type | Approx. Annual Fee | Pros | Cons |
| University Gym | 50 - 150 Euros | Super cheap, convenient location, strong social aspect | Equipment can be a bit old—as is common with gyms in Spanish universities—crowded during peak hours, fewer class options |
| Commercial Gym | 300 - 600 Euros | New equipment, better environment, wide variety of classes, 24-hour access | Expensive, location might be inconvenient, strong commercial atmosphere |
The sign-up process is usually straightforward. Just take your student ID and NIE to the university’s sports services center to inquire and register. Finally, here are a few quick tips: First, ask if they offer a free trial day. Second, clarify if the fee covers all facilities; some amenities like swimming pools or special classes might cost extra. Third, try to go during off-peak hours, like in the morning or right when they open in the afternoon, for a much better experience. I hope this guide was helpful!
