A Celebration Turned to Chaos
In the early hours of July 20, 2026, as Spain erupted in celebration after winning the World Cup, what should have been a joyous occasion in Ciudad Rodrigo, a town of about 12,000 in the province of Salamanca, took a tragic turn.
The incident occurred at a central landmark, the Fuente del Árbol Gordo (Fountain of the Fat Tree). Local tradition sees citizens, especially the youth, gather here to celebrate major sporting victories by climbing the fountain or jumping into its basin to express their excitement. That night, a large crowd of celebrants flocked to the site, with many climbing onto the top platform supported by a central stone pillar.
The Fatal Collapse
Overwhelmed by the number of people who had climbed onto the top platform, far exceeding its structural capacity, the central part of the stone fountain suddenly gave way. Without warning, the entire top platform collapsed, sending heavy stone blocks and the people standing on them crashing into the pool below.
Tragically, a 13-year-old local boy who was in the fountain’s pool was unable to get out of the way in time. The collapsing masonry struck him directly, trapping him beneath the rubble. On-site footage showed the celebration instantly replaced by panic and chaos.
Emergency Response and Tragic Outcome
Following the accident, police officers maintaining order at the scene acted immediately, rushing into the fountain to move the stones by hand in an attempt to free the trapped boy. Despite the swift rescue effort, the boy’s injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead after being rushed to a local health center.
In addition to the deceased teenager, two other people were injured in the collapse. What was meant to be a victory celebration for all of Spain became a nightmare for this small town.
A City in Mourning
After the tragedy, the Ciudad Rodrigo city council issued a statement overnight, expressing deep sorrow for the victim and offering condolences to his family. “The entire city is heartbroken by this immense loss. A celebration of Spain’s victory has now turned into a disaster for all our citizens,” the statement read.
To mourn the young life tragically lost, the city council has ordered flags to be flown at half-mast and has officially declared a three-day period of mourning, effective from the day of the incident.
