Lately, I’ve received many questions about recommendations for universities in Spain—outside of Madrid and Barcelona—that offer great value and a wonderful environment. Of course, there are! Today, I want to talk about what I consider a hidden gem: the University of Girona. This university is located in the picturesque city of Girona—yes, the very same place used as the filming location for the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing from ‘Game of Thrones’! The city itself is classical and tranquil, making studying and living here an absolute delight.
While the University of Girona (UdG) may not be as large as the Complutense University of Madrid or the University of Barcelona, it is a vibrant and modern public university. Its campuses are spread throughout the city, with the most famous one being the Barri Vell campus in the Old Quarter (Barri Vell). The buildings themselves are historic monuments; imagine attending classes in centuries-old cloisters—it makes you feel truly immersed in culture. Strolling along cobblestone streets, with ancient city walls and cathedrals all around, creates an incredible learning environment.

Strong Programs and Application at UdG
UdG excels in many areas, particularly in Tourism Management, Water Science, Food Science and Technology, Chemistry, and Computer Science. Since Girona is a major tourist destination, the tourism program at the University of Girona excels at integrating theory with practical experience. For international students, the application process for master’s programs is similar to that of other Spanish public universities, focusing primarily on your academic background and GPA. Here is a general guide to tuition fees, though specific costs will depend on the program and number of credits:
| Student Type | Estimated Undergraduate Tuition Fee |
| EU Students | Approx. €1,500 - €2,500 |
| Non-EU Students | Approx. €2,500 - €4,500 |
The quality of life in Girona is exceptionally high. Compared to Barcelona, rent and living expenses are considerably lower, so you don’t have to worry about exorbitant costs. The city is compact and easily navigable on foot or by bike. It’s also well-connected: Barcelona is just a 40-minute train ride away, and the stunning Costa Brava is reachable in about half an hour by car. Imagine spending weekends with friends, sunbathing on the beach—it’s incredibly idyllic!
If you dislike the hustle and bustle of a big city and want to study in a quiet, safe, and beautiful place while experiencing authentic Catalan culture, the University of Girona is an excellent choice to consider. It might not be the highest-ranked, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most charming universities. Any current UdG students or alumni reading this? Share your experiences in the comments
