Heatwave Ends as Unstable Weather Arrives
An upper-level trough system from the Atlantic has entered Spain, with the associated cold air officially ending the recent heatwave. The arrival of this weather system has significantly increased atmospheric instability, creating conditions for rain and thunderstorms. This unstable weather is forecast to persist over the next few days and may intensify this weekend, affecting most of Spain.
Multiple Alerts Issued for Heat and Thunderstorms
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued multiple weather warnings this Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Heat alerts are in effect for Andalusia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, and the Canary Islands. Specifically, yellow heat warnings have been issued for the Costa del Sol in Malaga, the Ebro Valley in Zaragoza, the central basin of Lleida, the Empordà region in Girona, and the interior of Mallorca, where temperatures could reach 36°C.
Meanwhile, weather alerts have been issued for the Gúdar and Maestrazgo areas in the province of Teruel, and for the northern interior of Castellón, due to the possibility of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Canary Islands: A Triple Threat of Heat, Wind, and Waves
The Canary Islands are facing complex weather conditions. An orange warning for high temperatures is active for the eastern, southern, and western parts of Gran Canaria, with highs expected to reach 37°C. The islands of La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Tenerife remain under a yellow heat warning.
In addition to the heat, strong winds and rough seas also pose a threat. Gusts of up to 90 km/h are expected on Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Tenerife, accompanied by large waves. A wind advisory has also been issued for Lanzarote.
Weekend Outlook: Cooler Temperatures Spreading, Thunderstorms Intensifying in the Northeast
According to analysis from the weather website eltiempo.es, the upper-level trough is expected to strengthen over northeastern Spain by Thursday, leading to more intense thunderstorm activity in Aragon, the northern Valencian Community, and especially Catalonia.
Regarding temperatures, the cooling trend will become more widespread across the country starting Thursday, with the most significant drops in the north. This cooler weather is expected to gradually extend to most of the country over the weekend, offering a temporary respite.
