On August 12, 2026, Spain will experience an exceptionally rare astronomical phenomenon: a total solar eclipse traversing the Iberian Peninsula, the first of its kind visible in the region since 1912. Seizing this unique opportunity, Spain’s Iberia has announced an exclusive “eclipse-chasing flight” to allow passengers to witness this spectacular moment from a unique aerial perspective.
Flight and Route Details
The special flight is scheduled to depart from Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport at 6:45 PM on August 12, 2026, and will return to the same airport after the viewing. The flight will be operated by the latest-generation Airbus A321XLR from Iberia’s fleet. To ensure the best possible observation, the flight path has been meticulously planned to fly above the province of Palencia at an altitude of over 10,000 meters (about 33,000 feet), avoiding ground-level weather and atmospheric interference for the clearest possible view.
An Exclusive Aerial Viewing Experience
At an altitude of over 30,000 feet, passengers will not only witness the breathtaking moment the sun is completely obscured by the moon but will also enjoy an experience unparalleled by ground-based observation. The sky will display a unique twilight effect, and passengers will have the chance to see Venus, Mercury, and some bright stars—normally hidden by daylight—with the naked eye, experiencing the depth and mystery of the cosmos.

The flight will feature a research team from the Shelios astronomical project, led by renowned astronomer Miquel Serra-Ricart from the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics (Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias). Additionally, a pilot with a background in astrophysics will be part of the crew. Together, they will provide live, expert commentary for passengers, offering in-depth explanations of the science behind the total solar eclipse.
