Introduction
A shocking and tragic shooting recently took place inside a Guardia Civil barracks in the town of Llanes, in the northern Spanish region of Asturias. A 49-year-old male officer broke into the barracks and shot and killed his 50-year-old ex-wife, who was also an officer serving at the same location. After the attack, the suspect engaged in a firefight with responding colleagues, was shot, and died en route to the hospital.
The Incident: A Fatal Attack Inside the Barracks
The incident occurred around 1:30 PM local time. The suspect, using his familiarity with the barracks from his previous service there, bypassed the main entrance to access the interior area. He then located his ex-wife, who was on duty, and after a brief, heated argument, he drew a gun and shot her, killing her instantly.
A lieutenant who rushed to the scene attempted to intervene and rescue the victim but was shot in the leg by the suspect, sustaining serious injuries. The situation at the scene was described as extremely dangerous and chaotic.
Suspect’s Background: Previously Investigated for Gender Violence
According to investigators, the perpetrator and the victim have three children and were in the midst of tense divorce proceedings. Crucially, the man had a prior record of gender violence and was under investigation. Just days before the incident, he had received official notification of his dismissal from service, and his service weapon had been formally confiscated.
The victim had previously been included in Spain’s official Comprehensive Protection System for Victims of Gender Violence (VioGén), indicating that the threat she faced was already recognized. However, the suspect used a weapon obtained through illegal means, such as theft or robbery, to carry out the tragic attack.
Standoff and Aftermath
After shooting his ex-wife and injuring his colleague, the suspect attempted to flee the scene with his weapon. Other Guardia Civil officers present responded decisively when he resisted arrest and continued to fire, ultimately neutralizing him. The suspect was critically wounded and rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries in the ambulance.
The Judicial Police unit of the Guardia Civil has now taken full control of the case and launched an in-depth investigation.
Official Classification and Social Reflection
The local government has preliminarily classified this case as a gender violence homicide. If officially confirmed, this will be the 34th case of femicide due to gender violence in Spain this year. The incident again highlights the deeply rooted problem of gender violence in Spanish society, which persists even within disciplined law enforcement agencies.
