Fatal Gunshots Inside the Barracks
Recently, a shocking shooting incident rocked the nation at the Civil Guard barracks in Llanes, in the Asturias region of Spain. A male Civil Guard officer, armed with a gun, broke into the barracks and opened fire on his ex-partner, Laura Cruz, who was also an officer, killing her instantly.
During the attack, a lieutenant who tried to intervene was shot and seriously wounded by the suspect. The assailant was subsequently killed by his injuries following an exchange of fire with other responding officers.
The Weapon: A Stolen Colleague’s Service Firearm
According to the latest findings, the case has exposed serious internal management issues. The weapon used by the suspect was not his own service firearm but was stolen from a colleague’s locker in Zamora.
It is understood that the owner of the gun was off-duty that day and had stored the weapon in his barracks locker as per regulations. The suspect forcibly broke into the locker to steal the gun and deliberately staged the scene to make it look like the lock had been damaged, attempting to cover up his theft and indicating the act was premeditated.
Suspect’s Background and Investigation
Before his death, the male officer involved worked in the Civil Guard’s canine unit in Zamora. Notably, prior to the incident, he was already under a disciplinary investigation initiated by the Civil Guard’s General Directorate for undisclosed reasons. Officials have not yet released the specifics of that investigation.
This case has been classified as an act of gender-based violence (violencia de género). The head of the Zamora Civil Guard expressed deep sorrow over the event, emphasizing that the tragedy not only took the life of a female officer but also left her three innocent children without a mother.
