The forest fire situation in Spain’s Andalusia region remains critical. Since breaking out on August 6, the fire in the municipality of Niebla has continued to spread, forcing authorities to implement large-scale emergency measures.
Fire Status and Evacuation Operations
According to information released on Saturday, August 9, by Antonio Sanz, First Vice-President of the Andalusian Government and head of the Forest Fire Emergency Plan (Plan Infoca), the wildfire that started in the Niebla area has led to the precautionary evacuation of approximately 340 people. Official data indicates the fire has affected over 4,000 hectares, though officials stress that not all of the affected area has been completely burned. The fire currently remains at the highest level of emergency response.
Shifting Winds Complicate Firefighting Efforts
Speaking to the media from the advanced command post, Antonio Sanz highlighted that the main difficulty currently facing firefighting operations is the ‘constant change in wind direction.’ These unstable weather conditions are severely hampering the deployment of firefighters, can cause the fire’s perimeter to expand rapidly, and may create new fire fronts. Fire services anticipate another shift in wind direction on Saturday afternoon, which could further complicate the situation. They are racing against time to adjust their strategy and secure key areas before the wind changes.
Emergency Alerts and Multi-Agency Response
To address the risk of expansion, the Andalusia 112 Emergency Service has sent notifications via the mobile emergency alert system (ES-Alert) to residents in areas including Berrocal, Marigenta, El Membrillo, and El Pozuelo, urging them to closely monitor the fire’s progress. Relevant agencies are continuously deploying a large number of firefighters, heavy machinery, and other firefighting resources to the front lines.
Current Firefighting Strategy and Traffic Control
The current focus of firefighting efforts is on containing the northern flank of the fire to prevent it from spreading northeast. Fire crews are using heavy machinery to create and widen firebreaks while advancing a defense line from El Manzanito towards El Guijo to control potential spot fires. Additionally, a new control line is planned north of the recycling plant to stop the fire from spreading to the area between the A-493 and HU-3106 roads. Due to the fire, the HU-3106 road (the section from Niebla to Valverde del Camino) and the A-493 road remain closed. Authorities are advising the public to stay away from the affected areas.
