In the early hours of August 9, 2026, local time, a powerful explosion occurred in a semi-basement unit of an apartment building at 312 Hacienda de Pavones street, in the Moratalaz district of southeastern Madrid, the Spanish capital. The blast quickly triggered a fire. The loud noise startled nearby residents, several of whom immediately called emergency services.
Upon receiving the alerts, the Madrid City Fire Department (Bomberos del Ayuntamiento de Madrid) responded with high priority, dispatching 10 fire crews to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters immediately assessed the situation and began intensive firefighting and rescue operations.
Rescue Efforts and Tragic Outcome

However, on-site paramedics examined the man and confirmed he had no vital signs and was deceased. The victim was identified as a 61-year-old male. Following the confirmation of death, a psychological support team from SAMUR-Civil Protection (SAMUR-Protección Civil) immediately stepped in to provide counseling and support to the victim’s family who had arrived at the scene.
