The Incident: A Fatal Afternoon Conflict at Home
Around 2:30 PM last Friday, a family homicide took place at a residence on Valentín Aguirre street in Madrid’s Ciudad Lineal district. When police arrived at the scene, they found an 84-year-old man deceased.
According to initial reports, three people lived in the home: the deceased, his 44-year-old son, and the son’s 27-year-old partner. The woman stated that she was preparing lunch when the elderly man, who was in the living room, suddenly tried to attack her with a small knife, leading to a violent physical struggle.
Suspect’s Account: Insists It Was Self-Defense
The arrested 27-year-old woman insisted to the police that her actions were purely in self-defense. She explained that during the struggle with her father-in-law, she grabbed his neck to subdue him. When she let go, she realized he was unresponsive.
Paramedics at the scene examined the woman and found cuts and bite marks on her body. She claimed these injuries were sustained during the conflict with the elderly man and repeatedly stressed that she only fought back because her life was threatened.
Police Intervention and Scene Details
When police arrived, the elderly man was lying face-up on the floor, showing no signs of life. A notable detail is that at the time of the incident, the deceased’s son—the woman’s partner—was on a work call on the home’s terrace, completely unaware of the fatal conflict unfolding in the living room. He was only informed by the woman afterward.
Emergency medical responders (SAMUR-Protección Civil) not only confirmed the man’s death but also treated the woman’s injuries. Subsequently, police arrested her on suspicion of homicide and took her to the station for questioning. A psychological support team also arrived at the scene to provide emergency counseling to the son who witnessed the aftermath.
Investigation: Verifying the Self-Defense Claim is Key
The Homicide Division of Spain’s National Police has now taken over the case. The investigation will focus on verifying the woman’s claims of being attacked with a knife and acting in legitimate self-defense. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, while police conduct a detailed forensic examination of the scene and search for more evidence to reconstruct the events and determine legal responsibility.
