Increased Volcanic Activity in Tenerife Prompts Regular Official Reviews
Tenerife, one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations, has recently shown signs of unusually active underground volcanic activity, drawing close attention from geologists. Although experts assess no immediate danger of eruption, authorities have intensified monitoring and initiated a regular assessment procedure.
Significant Increase in Seismic Activity
According to the latest data from Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), Tenerife has recorded a cumulative 10 volcanic seismic swarms since the beginning of this year. This figure contrasts sharply with the past: only 6 similar geological events occurred in total over the previous nine years. The data indicates that the current level of geological activity is significantly higher than the historical average.
Characteristics of the Tremors and Public Impact
Experts point out that these frequent seismic events share common characteristics. Most are concentrated at a depth of about 10 kilometers and are generally small in magnitude, with the vast majority not exceeding 1.5 on the Richter scale. Due to their deep origin and low energy, residents on the surface have not felt any noticeable tremors. However, given the overall rise in volcanic activity, experts do not rule out the possibility of occasional felt earthquakes in the future.
Official Response and Monitoring System
In response to this series of geological developments, the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan’s steering committee (Pevolca) has held a special meeting to assess the situation. To ensure continuous monitoring, the committee has decided to establish a more rigorous monitoring and evaluation system, convening regular meetings every three months to comprehensively evaluate Tenerife’s geological status. This measure aims to ensure any potential changes in risk are promptly detected and addressed.
Long-Term Risk Assessment and Future Predictions
From a long-term perspective, experts have made predictions based on historical data analysis. The probability of a volcanic eruption in Tenerife within the next 50 years is estimated at around 40%. Notably, experts predict that a future eruption is more likely to occur on the island’s northeastern ridge, forming a new volcano, rather than on the main structure of the famous Mount Teide. For now, as long as monitoring data does not show a sustained migration of seismic activity towards the surface, and there is no significant ground deformation or large-scale abnormal gas emissions, the short- and medium-term risk of a volcanic eruption remains low, and there is no need for public alarm.
