A violent home invasion targeting an elderly woman living alone has occurred in Castell d’Aro, in the Baix Empordà region of Catalonia, Spain. Several masked assailants infiltrated the septuagenarian’s home, stealing a significant amount of valuables after using violent threats. The Catalan police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, has taken over the case and launched a full criminal investigation.
Masked Assailants Broke into the Residence
During the incident, several unidentified, masked suspects forced their way into a private residence in the Castell d’Aro area. The victim, a woman in her 70s, was home alone at the time. The robbers quickly subdued the victim. To prevent her from calling for help or alerting the police, the criminals tightly bound her and locked her in the house’s bathroom before proceeding to ransack the rooms for valuables.
€50,000 in Valuables Stolen Under Violent Duress
According to the preliminary on-site investigation and the victim’s statement, the perpetrators used a knife to directly threaten the woman. Law enforcement is still verifying whether the suspects were also carrying real or imitation firearms. Under severe threat to her life, the elderly woman was forced to give up the valuables stored in her home. Initial estimates indicate that the stolen cash and various pieces of jewelry are worth nearly €50,000. However, the exact amount of the loss is pending the final damage assessment report from the police.
Rescue by Family and Police Manhunt
The trapped woman was not discovered until her daughter returned home. The family member noticed something was amiss with the house and subsequently found her mother tied up in the bathroom, immediately calling emergency services and the police. The Mossos d’Esquadra promptly dispatched officers to secure the scene, and a specialized criminal investigation unit began collecting evidence.
In a recent update, the police noted that because all suspects wore masks throughout the crime, deliberately concealing their facial features, it has significantly hampered surveillance tracking and suspect identification efforts. As of now, the case is still in the lead-gathering and in-depth investigation stage, and no arrests have been made. Local security departments are working to retrieve footage from surrounding traffic cameras in hopes of tracking down the criminals soon.
