Case Background: A Scam in the Name of Legal Aid
Recently, an examining magistrate’s court in Barcelona, Spain, accepted a lawsuit against the legal service platform “Acaba con tu deuda” and its executives, accusing them of alleged fraud (estafa) and misappropriation (apropiación indebida).
The platform previously advertised nationwide in Spain, claiming to specialize in providing legal services to vulnerable groups in financial distress. Its core business was assisting clients in utilizing Spain’s “Second Chance Law” (Ley de Segunda Oportunidad), a law that allows eligible individuals and self-employed workers to apply for debt exoneration when they are unable to repay. However, after numerous clients paid exorbitant agency fees, the platform suddenly vanished into thin air, leaving their debt problems unresolved.
Modus Operandi: Vanishing After Collecting Advance Payments
According to the plaintiffs’ lawyers, the platform’s fraudulent methods were clearly premeditated. They first lured clients eager to escape debt traps and charged an upfront service fee of approximately 2,500 to 3,700 euros per person. Many victims were already heavily indebted and even had to take out new loans just to pay this fee.
For years after receiving the payments, the platform failed to submit any necessary legal documents to the courts to initiate the debt exoneration process. Instead, they repeatedly delayed the process under the guise of requesting “supplementary materials,” creating the illusion that the cases were being processed. Ultimately, when the victims discovered that the platform’s offices were vacated and all contact numbers were disconnected, they realized they had been scammed.
Scale of the Case and Victims’ Losses
According to current statistics, the case has affected hundreds of victims spread across Spain. Combining the direct financial losses of each victim, the total involved amount is estimated to reach up to 1 million euros.

This fraud case has dealt a double blow to the victims. Not only did they lose the money paid to seek legal aid, but they also missed the optimal window to resolve their debt issues due to procedural delays. It is reported that some victims ultimately managed to restart the legal process and obtain a court ruling for debt exoneration only with the help of other professional lawyers.
Judicial Progress and Follow-up Investigations
Currently, the judicial proceedings for this case are underway. The court has summoned the primary suspects of the investigation, requiring them to testify in court soon. Additionally, former employees of the platform will also be investigated to clarify their roles in the incident.
The lawyers representing the victims stated that, judging from the operational model and final outcome, the platform had a clear intent of illegal profiteering and fraud from its inception. Its actions constituted a crime exploiting the desperate psychology of vulnerable groups seeking help in times of distress. As the investigation deepens, more details of the case are expected to be revealed.
